Resume Format for Freshers in India: The Complete 2026 Guide

Aug 7, 20269 min read

Writing your first resume with little or no work experience feels like a trap: employers want experience, but you can't get experience without a job. The good news is that ATS platforms and recruiters in India evaluate fresher resumes differently from experienced-hire resumes — they know you won't have five years of impact statements. What they're actually screening for is structure, relevant coursework or projects, and genuine skill signals.

Here's a section-by-section format that works for campus placements, Naukri/LinkedIn applications, and direct company portals alike.

Section order for a fresher resume

  1. 1Contact information
  2. 2Career objective or summary (2–3 lines)
  3. 3Education (with percentage/CGPA)
  4. 4Projects (this is your experience section as a fresher)
  5. 5Technical skills
  6. 6Internships (if any)
  7. 7Certifications
  8. 8Achievements / extracurriculars

Notice that Education comes before Projects, and Projects effectively replaces "Experience." This is the opposite order from an experienced-hire resume, and it's deliberate — as a fresher, your degree and academic projects are your strongest evidence, so they should lead.

Career objective: keep it specific, not generic

Most fresher resumes open with a career objective so generic it could apply to any candidate for any job — "Seeking a challenging position to utilize my skills." This wastes the highest-visibility line on your page.

  • Weak: "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organization to utilize my skills and grow professionally."
  • Strong: "Final-year Computer Science student with hands-on experience building 3 full-stack projects in React and Node.js, seeking a Software Engineer role to apply strong fundamentals in data structures and web development."

Projects: your substitute for work experience

For freshers, the Projects section carries the same weight the Experience section carries for someone with a job history. Write each project the same way you'd write a job bullet point — action, tools, and result — not just a one-line description.

  • Weak: "Made a website for college project."
  • Strong: "Built a full-stack attendance-tracking web app using React, Express, and MongoDB, deployed on Render; used by 40+ classmates during final-year evaluation."

Technical skills: match what recruiters and ATS filters search for

On platforms like Naukri, recruiters often search resumes by keyword before ever opening your profile. List specific tools and languages, not vague categories.

  • List languages, frameworks, and tools separately (e.g. "Languages: Python, Java, JavaScript" / "Tools: Git, Postman, MySQL")
  • Only list what you can speak to confidently in an interview
  • Match the job description's exact terminology where it applies — "Node.js" not just "backend development"

Formatting rules that matter for Indian company ATS filters

  • Keep it to one page — freshers rarely have enough content to justify two
  • Use a single-column, ATS-tested layout (avoid heavy graphic templates from generic template sites)
  • Include your CGPA/percentage for 10th, 12th, and degree — many Indian company ATS filters screen on a minimum cutoff
  • Save as PDF with selectable text, not a scanned image or a photo of a printed resume

Common fresher resume mistakes

  • Listing every course from your syllabus instead of only relevant ones
  • No GitHub/portfolio link for technical roles — this is often the first thing a technical recruiter checks
  • Objective statement that reads identically to every other fresher's
  • Skipping soft skills entirely — communication and teamwork evidence from group projects or college fests is worth including briefly

Start from a fresher-friendly template

The right layout does some of this work for you — a clean single-column format that leads with Education and Projects, sized correctly for one page.

Check your resume before you apply

Campus placement drives and bulk Naukri applications both mean your resume gets scanned by software before a person reads it. It's worth 60 seconds to check exactly how an ATS parses your resume before sending it out at scale.
